The Flash Technique

Healing Without Having to Relive It

For many people, the idea of trauma therapy brings its own kind of dread. The thought of sitting with painful memories — feeling the full weight of them, week after week — can be enough to put off seeking help altogether. That hesitation is understandable. And it's one of the reasons I offer the Flash Technique.

The Flash Technique is a gentle, research-supported method that reduces the emotional intensity of traumatic memories without requiring you to focus on them directly. It offers a path to real relief — often faster and with far less distress than traditional trauma processing.

What is the Flash Technique

Developed as an adjunct to EMDR therapy, the Flash Technique works differently from most trauma approaches. Rather than bringing a painful memory into full conscious awareness, you hold it only at the edge of your attention — just enough for your brain to begin processing it — while your focus stays anchored to something positive and engaging.

Brief, rhythmic eye blinks are used during this time to facilitate processing. The result is a meaningful reduction in the distress associated with the memory, often without the emotional activation that traditional trauma work involves.

You don't have to describe the memory in detail. You don't have to feel it fully to heal it.

Why It Works for Complex Trauma

For people carrying complex or layered trauma, the Flash Technique is often a wiser starting point than jumping into deeper processing work. Here's why:

It keeps you within your window of tolerance. When the nervous system has been under chronic stress, it has less capacity to handle direct exposure to painful material. The Flash Technique processes without pushing — making it well-suited for people whose systems are already overtaxed.

It gives protective parts less reason to step in. Because the Flash Technique doesn't require as much direct contact with the memory, it's less likely to activate those defenses — which means less resistance and more forward movement.

It reduces the fear of therapy itself. For people who have had difficult experiences in therapy, or who carry a deep dread of opening things up, the Flash Technique can build trust in the healing process. It demonstrates, often within a single session, that relief is possible without re-living.

What a Session Looks Like

The Flash Technique is one of the more efficient tools in trauma therapy. Many people experience a noticeable reduction in distress within a single session, sometimes in under an hour.

A typical session involves:
  • Briefly identifying the memory or experience to be worked on — without dwelling on it
  • Shifting your focus to a positive, engaging image or memory
  • A series of brief eye blinks while holding both in awareness
  • Checking in on the level of distress associated with the memory as we go

There is no requirement to narrate the trauma. There is no extended exposure to distressing material. Most people find the experience surprisingly manageable — and the results often speak for themselves.

How I Use it in Practice

I use the Flash Technique in two main ways. For some clients, it serves as a standalone approach — quietly reducing the charge of specific memories without the need for deeper processing. For others, it functions as a first step that clears the way for more traditional EMDR work, making what comes next feel more approachable.

In both cases, the decision about which approach to use — and when — is always made collaboratively, based on what your nervous system is ready for.

Is the Flash Technique Right for You?

The Flash Technique may be a good fit if you:
  • Have tried trauma therapy before and found it too intense
  • Are hesitant to begin trauma work because of fear of what it might bring up
  • Are carrying memories that feel too charged to approach directly
  • Want to begin building relief before moving into deeper processing

If you're not sure whether this is the right starting point, that's exactly what a consultation is for.
